Friday, August 10, 2007: Back-to-School Shoppers Encouraged to Purchase Pajamas for Needy Children
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Northern
California Chapter of the Pajama Program, a children's charity dedicated to
providing new, warm pajamas and books to children in need, today announced
its "Back-to-School" drive to encourage people to pick up extra pairs of
pajamas as they shop for their families.
"As people are out shopping for back-to-school clothes, we hope they
will take a moment to think about the thousands of children in our area who
do not have a pair of their own pajamas," said April Fuchs-Smith,
co-president of the Northern California Chapter of the Pajama Program.
The Pajama Program brings new pajamas to needy children in Northern
California who are living in homeless shelters, emergency shelter, or
foster homes. Many are youngsters who may not know the comfort of a mother
or father to tuck them into a cozy bed and read them a bedtime story. Too
many have been abandoned, most deprived of any love at all.
"The small gift of a clean pair of pajamas can make all the difference
in the world in helping these children feel cared for and loved," said
Pallie Zambrano, co-president of the Northern California Chapter of the
Pajama Program.
All sizes of pajamas are needed and appreciated, but there is a special
need for teen-sized pajamas (Adult Small through Adult Extra Large). All of
the pajamas collected go to local Northern California organizations
including Edgewood Center for Children, Fred Finch Youth Center, Children's
Shelter of Santa Clara County, Valley of the Moon Children's Home,
Children's Receiving Home of Sacramento, St. John's Shelter, Rebekah's
Children's Services, Santa Cruz County Children's Services, Shasta County
Children's Services, Sacramento Crisis Nursery, Pajaro Valley Shelter,
Children's Village of Sonoma County, and Future Families Foster and
Adoption Agency.
Since January, the Northern California Chapter has raised more than 790
pairs of pajamas and 1,400 books for the children in this area. For more
